10 Ways to Be Original in Your Story

Every good story has at least one new element.

This could be in its setting, protagonist nature and goal, theme, twist, and especially its concept. When this original element resonates with a reader, producer, director, or talent you have a much higher chance to get action on your script.

Think like this:

James Bond, killer and lover.

The Godfather, a good man succeeding an evil father in a murderous enterprise.

Star Trek, a western in space.

Dr Who, an eccentric time traveller from another world.

Six Sense, that twist!

Without a Clue, now Watson is the genius and Sherlock Holmes a dullard.

Gone Girl, yes that twist.

Liar Liar, a lawyer and dad who must tell the truth.

Planet of the Apes, that last shot.

The Fountainhead, the virtue of selfishness.

Avatar, its world.

Escape from Mogadishu, its concept of South and North Koreans forced to work together to live.

Jurassic Park, cloned and escaped chomping dinosaurs.

Breaking Bad, its crazy drug world.

In what way is your story original or new so that producers must take notice?

Actionable Writing Tips

3) Has my setting never been seen before?

4) Is my hero from a new field, period, or world?

5) How is my villain a new take on evil?

6) How is my hero a new take on the good?

7) Is my concept a new twist or ironic take on an old tale?

8) Do I complicate my protagonist’s two top values in a new arresting way?

9) Does a main character have to make a choice that is shocking and never been seen before?

10) Are some of my conflicts, events, scenes new to the screen?
