Climaxing a Theme
A film’s climax must answer its central thematic question.
Casablanca, one of the most influential films ever made, explores this thematic question:
Should Rick Blaine engage with World War Two and love, or remain bitterly isolated from life, people, and the conflict?
The climactic scene in the film provides this answer:
One must fight against evil despotism and stand for liberty, even if it means foreswearing romance during the war.
This thematic resolution resonates deeply with audiences. They're initially surprised by Rick's choice to prioritize the war over love. Then, even as they hold out hope for Rick and Ilsa's reunion, they understand his decision. Their separation reflected the reality faced by millions of couples during World War Two. The war had to come first – only in a free and peaceful world could love truly flourish, and threats to loved ones had to be defeated to ensure their safety.
The plot of Casablanca builds inexorably towards answering this crucial thematic question. Without this central theme and Rick's final choice, the emotional impact of the film would collapse. The audience would neither care about nor be moved by the climax.
Actionable Creative Takeaway
Do you explicitly develop the theme of your story and plan how to resolve it in the climax?
If not, follow these steps:
1. Write down your story's core thematic question.
2. Connect this theme to your main character's motivation and transformational journey.
3. Resolve the theme through your protagonist's final, life-altering decision in the climax.
All stories are ideas in conflict and action. Understanding this principle helps you to harness theme to create more powerful, resonant narratives. Casablanca is a masterclass for every creative serious about using theme to craft an unforgettable story.
